The annual Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer has named Cape Town the world’s best holiday destination in 2023!  

This year 40 global destinations were considered, with prices of essentials like drinks and meals, among other things, compared. Overall, Cape Town, South Africa came out right on top with the best value for money for Britons who are travelling internationally. Turkey, Marmaris ranked second place and Bulgaria Sunny Beach came in third.

Kalk Bay 

Nestled between the mountainous Cape Town crags and the steel blue waters of False Bay on the Cape’s East Coast lies the picturesque seaside town of Kalk Bay, its village atmosphere, interesting markets and café culture combine with the raw beauty of this area to make Kalk Bay a cherished hot-spot, even for locals.   

When to visit: During the South African Autumn season (from March to May), and Spring (from September to November). There are fewer crowds but still enviable weather.   

Best things to see and enjoy: casual fresh-from-the-sea fish & chips on the pier, or upmarket dining at Harbour House restaurant, quirky shops, artisanal bakeries, art galleries and unusual accommodation.  

Constantia Winelands 

Make the home-base of your Western Cape trip one of the luxury villas, fine boutique hotels, elegant guesthouses or historic homesteads sheltered in the affluent, peaceful suburb of Constantia in Cape Town, South Africa. At the end of a busy day, the return to Constantia’s farm-style cafes, classic Cape Dutch architecture and lush vineyards delights the senses and soothes the soul. 

When to visit: For warm weather outdoor activities, visit between December and March, Winters in the Cape are cool, wet, and partly cloudy.  

Best things to see and enjoy: Explore the fragrant rose-farms of Chart Farm on horseback, traversing extensive farm gardens & vineyards. Or experience the Constantia Wine Route, with stops at Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Constantia Uitsig and more. There’s also an option to tee off with the golf-elite at the 18-hole Steenberg Golf Estate located at the foot of Constantiaberg. 

Cape Point Nature Reserve   

The southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Point, is an excellent spot to spend the day with the family. Take the Flying Dutchman Funicular to the top for insane views, grab a bite to eat at the Two Ocean’s Restaurant and then walk it off along the Olifantsbos Shipwreck Trail.    

When to visit: We recommend visiting the nature reserve during the warmer months between October to February where you’re more likely to see the rich species of animals and birds 

Best things to see and enjoy: See the old lighthouse, iconic ocean views, beaches and array of animals.  

Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town Central 

No family trip to Cape Town is complete without visiting the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Give yourself a few hours to stroll among the grassy hills and colourful blooms. Be sure to walk the tree canopy Boomslang (tree snake), a raised walkway that offers up some spectacular views. 

When to visit: Spring sees Kirstenbosch blossom with various flowers and lush greenery. Visit from late August to January.  

Best things to see and enjoy: Walk the famous Centenary Treetop Canopy Walk, also known as the ‘Boomslang’. The walk is just 130 metres long, is wheelchair-friendly and takes you from the forest floor, through the trees, into stunning panoramic views of Cape Town.
