It’s a romantic, nostalgic and intimate experience – and yours to enjoy on our 10-night train-to-sea journey.
From Gauteng to Cape Town, you will travel through gold-rich grasslands, haunting semi-deserts, spectacular mountain ranges and scenic winelands to discover why South Africa is considered a world in one country.
A perfect choice for couples or honeymooners, explore the hidden gems of Johannesburg and Pretoria, from candlelit dinners in a “green city” to discovering the birth of civilization at the Cradle of Humankind. Taking a pause in the Northern Cape, marvel at the Big Hole of Kimberley and stroll through the Mine Museum to view uncut diamonds and jewelry from the diamond rush heydays. Your journey ends in cosmopolitan Cape Town, where you have seven days to take in the colorful culture, world-class cuisine, exceptional wines and bucket-list activities of South Africa’s Mother City.
Your Itinerary
1 night in Gauteng
Gauteng is home to some of the most iconic places and monuments from South Africa’s history, such as Soweto, Constitution Hill, the Voortrekker Monument and the Union Buildings. It’s the economic powerhouse of the country, and as such, is known for its multicultural mix of people, eclectic heritage, and bustling jacaranda-lined cities fringed by scenic natural landscapes.
It might be South Africa’s smallest province, but it is packed to the brim with things to do and places to see. From your accommodation at The Maslow Time Square, you are within convenient reach of some popular attractions, including the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves – the very place that birthed civilization.
DINING SUGGESTIONS
Discover experiential Afro-Asian dining at its best at The Maslow Time Square’s sophisticated rooftop restaurant.
WHERE YOU'LL STAY
The Maslow Time Square
Situated in the Menlyn Maine Precinct, The Maslow Time Square enjoys an enviable location in South Africa’s first “green city” where the focus is on shopping and wellness activities in a walkable and bustling environment.
2 nights onboard Rovos Rail
All aboard the most luxurious train in the world! Leaving Gauteng behind, you’re invited to slip into the spirit of a bygone travel era on Rovos Rail. A pause on route to Cape Town gives you the chance to discover a small town with a big history. Kimberley is synonymous with the birth of the international diamond trade. Today, it’s renowned for the Big Hole, which is the largest man-made excavation in the world.
A visit here will give you an opportunity to explore some impressive historical attractions scattered throughout the town, such as the Kimberley Mine Museum, which takes you on a trip back in time to when diamonds were first found in South Africa in 1866. Three years later the 83-carat ‘Star of South Africa’ was discovered, unleashing a frenzied diamond rush not seen before or since.
Next stop: Matjiesfontein. After breakfast, you have an opportunity to disembark the train at Whitehill Siding to explore the historic village centered around the Lord Milner Hotel.
DINING SUGGESTIONS
Meals on board Rovos Rail are served in one sitting only in the dining cars and are complemented by a selection of fine South African wines. An enthusiastic team of chefs is responsible for overseeing the very important task of ensuring your every need is catered for. Wear your best – the dress code is formal.
