Considered by many to be the best safari destination in Kenya, the Masai Mara is famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration, when massive herds of wildebeest make their way north across the golden savannah plains on their circular journey.

This is Big 5 game country, with four of Africa’s most illustrious crew commonly spotted – lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – while the fifth, the rhino, is seen only on rare (and very lucky) occasions.

Game Watching in the Masai Mara

Established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary, the Masai Mara encompasses more than 370,000 acres, with no fences between the park and its neighbor, the Serengeti in Tanzania, making it one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife. The flat grasslands provide plentiful grazing, while the area’s two main rivers, the Talek and the Mara, are home to hippos and crocodiles, as well as abundant birdlife. Besides spectacular game viewing, the Mara is particularly famous for its big cats – lion, leopard and cheetah.

Best Place to see the Migration in Kenya

From August to October, millions of zebra, wildebeest and other animals make their way north into the park from the Serengeti, crossing the Mara River in search of fresh grazing. The phenomenon – which has been called the Eighth Wonder of the World – is fraught with nature’s drama: galloping herds and thrilling predator attacks, especially during the river crossings. No wonder the Great Migration tops the wish list for many travelers.

Meet the Maasai

The reserve is named after the Maasai, a semi-nomadic people who have long inhabited the region. Meeting them is a true highlight on a Masai Mara safari. You can visit a Maasai village and learn about their culture and history as well as witness some of the traditional rituals and ceremonies that make up Maasai culture – such as the Maasai warrior jumping dance.

Best Time for a Masai Mara Safari

As one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa, thanks to its great game viewing and mild climate, you can visit the Masai Mara any time of the year. However, the busiest season falls between July and November, when the Great Migration takes place.

Traveling to Kenya during the Green Season (November to April) can also be particularly rewarding as it’s the birthing season and the young calves ensure that a healthy population of predators is always nearby.

During summer in Kenya (December to March), average temperatures range between 68°F and 93°F, while winter (June to August) is mild, with temperatures ranging from 64°F to 84°F.
